We were assigned to make a poster about the book Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. We were assigned think of a word that relates to the diary and write a paragraph explaining the word and why it was important. We also were also told to include five images that relate to the word and three quotes from the book. I chose some very good pictures but it was hard for me to me to mention descriptions of things that I explain. I think I improved on picking more appropriate images and finding some good quotes. I learned that I need to take more time on my poster and really read things over more.
I am Anne Frank
Friday, 12 June, 1942
I just got you for my birthday as well as a new blouse. I am so excited to have gotten you. We are going to be best friends. I am going to try and write at least every other day. I’ll try my best. I had no idea I was going to get a diary for my birthday. You were wrapped in a beautiful gold wrapping paper and a puffed up red bow. You have a beautiful silver buckle on top of the ruby red plaid covering protecting you. I will write my daily activities and my funny stories to you almost every day, so I can keep you in the loop.
I am sometimes cocky. Boys cannot get their hands off of me, and they cannot stop following. When I am riding my bike, they are always following me. They always offer to walk home with me, and they will always try to put their arms around me or try to hold hands with me. Boys will try and hold my books for me. I sometimes like having boys around me, but they also get on my nerves a lot. I see most of them as friends to me, but I can tell that some boys want to a little bit farther.
I am optimistic a lot of the time too. Even though all my friends are being taken away and being tortured, I still think I will make it out. Every evening I take a peek out of my window and see all these Jews being taken away and little kids with dirty baggy clothes and almost scared to death. I try to not look at that though. I try to look at the cars, boats, and rain outside. My favorite thing to listen to is the screech of the trams as the trams as they drive by dad’s business downstairs.
I love to please my family too. There is this boy that I really like. His name is Peter. He is so nice, loving, and he is really caring. I have to make sure that whole family likes him first before I can like him. The family absolutely loves him, and I am so happy because now I can like him, and he can like me. He takes my books from me in the hallway and will walk with me to my next class holding my books. Whenever he walks home with me, he will carry my heavy backpack full of books, plus he will carry his own heavy backpack with both of our lunch boxes.
Many of my friends say that I am funny too, but I do not try to be that funny. Peter upstairs is so annoying, and he tries to be so funny sometimes but he is not. He tries to impress me all the time, and tries to tell me “funny” jokes, but I never listen to them because none of them are even close to being funny. I guess my friends say that I am funny because I use a funny tone of sarcasm. I don’t mean to be making fun of people; I am just trying to be myself.
Now that you know many things about me, I cannot wait to share my secrets with you. I am so happy that I will be able to share my daily activities with you. I will try my best to write to you every other day.
Outsiders Character Essay Reflection
We were assigned to write an essay about a character in the book that we just read, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Our objectives were to learn how to write a five paragraph essay, study a character, and embed quotes. I think I used some good and descriptive words in this assignment. What was really hard for me was to make sure that all my verb tenses were the same. I got very frustrated. I learned how to describe a character using quotes, how to write a five paragraph essay, and to use better descriptive words instead of boring ones. I chose to write about Darry because he was responsible just like me.
Responsibility is when someone takes charge or someone takes control. People who are responsible don’t get each other into trouble. They keep others out of trouble. Being a responsible person can also do helpful things around the house. They don’t do dumb things that aren’t helpful or bad things. Parents, teachers, police, and government people are all responsible. Darry is responsible in the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
Darry is responsible when he takes care of all his brothers because they have no parents. Darry helps the boys when they are hurt. He is always looking out for them, and he is very protective of them. Darry is very worried when Pony comes back from the lot late at night. When Pony comes back from the lot he says, “Darry would kill me if I got into trouble with the police.” (page 2) Darry makes sure that Pony is doing the right thing.
In addition, Darry is responsible when he encourages and makes the kids not want to fight. He tells them what’s wrong and what is right to do. He protects the kids by helping in fights, and he makes sure the kids are in good shape and ready for fights on the streets. Darry says to Pony, “You fight real well for a kid your size. But you were in shape before. You’ve lost weight and you don’t look so great, kid. You’re tensed up too much.” (pg. 134) He is trying to protect his brothers from getting hurt. Darry is a good mentor and a good person to look up to because he is responsible.
Lastly, Darry is a strong, heavy hearted, protective, and responsible guy. He makes sure that he knows what the kids are going to do before they go out, so he can be aware of them. He is a really nice guy to the other greaser gangs. He helps them out even if it has nothing to do with one of his brothers. Pony says, “Darry, works too long and hard to be interested in a story.”(pg. 6) Obviously, this shows that Darry has no time to do things he wants because he is always thinking about others before himself.
Responsibility is so important to this world. Without responsibility, many more people would be going to jail and getting in a lot more trouble because they wouldn’t have someone to tell them what’s wrong and what’s right to do. Presidents, police, my mom and dad, baseball coaches, brothers, and firefighters are all responsible people, and there are many more. Darry is also responsible in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. He is responsible when he takes care of all his little brothers because they have no parents, responsible when he keeps the kids in good shape and when he makes sure what the kids are doing before they go out, and responsible when he helps the other greaser gangs when they aren’t even related to him.
I am responsible too. I am responsible when I am with my friends. If they want to do something bad for fun, I will not go with them or I will persuade them not to do whatever they were going to do. I am responsible when I do things around the house for my mom; when it is a mess, I take control and clean the house. I am also responsible when I take charge of my baseball team, lead stretches, and get them motivated. However, I am not responsible sometimes. I make bad choices, and I do not think about them. Most of the time in school and on the baseball field, and even at home, I try to make the better choices and be more responsible.
Our first assignment of the year was to explain ourselves by only using six words. I think I described myself well and explained my hobbies. I think it was hard to only use six words. I had many sentences that I had seven words with. I learned that it is good to take out the trash words and just cut to the chase and tell the reader what you want to say.
Eat. Sleep. Play baseball every day.
